Cancer. What an ugly 6 letter word. One our family has been bombarded with for over 8 years now. First with our daughter, diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2011, then myself diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and then with thyroid cancer in 2014. Our daughter then relapsed in 2015 and then relapsed again in 2017. In 2018, after 7 years of battling leukemia, our daughter went home to where she could stand in the sun, dance on the golden streets and eat all the dairy she could ever desire; her journey complete.
After all of that, we needed to close the door on cancer. A risk assessment done a few months ago put me at up to an 80% chance of relapsing in my lifetime. So, I made a tough decision that I had avoided for more than 5 years. The decision to have a double mastectomy. To hopefully, God willing, close the doors on cancer in our lives forever. And so, this upcoming Monday, I will be going in for a double mastectomy with the beginning stages of reconstruction.
