The Twist

When we think about a love story, we think of it like typical Disney style fairy tale. A man and a woman meet-the beginning. The courtship-the middle, and the end- and they lived happily ever after. But life doesn’t work that way. There is no point where there is a magical sunset that we will ride off into. It’s like when my oldest daughter found out that the story behind Disneys Hercules was completely different than what is shown on film. She looked at me, her mouth hanging open and said, “My life is lie.”

In the movie Goosebumps the character R.L Stein comes before a group of high school students and lays it out for them when he says, “Every story ever told can be broken down into three parts. The beginning, the middle, and the twist.” After watching this movie recently I began to think about how apt that concept is in our human lives. How often do we get going in our lives and get to a point where we feel like we should have reached our ‘happily ever after’, only to find our lives spinning out of control. Something comes along that throws us so far off our fame that we don’t even know what just hit us. We thought we were playing the game Payday, only to find ourselves standing on the starting line in the game of Life; looking at a whole new beginning, rather than the peaceful happy ever after that we were expecting. That’s the twist.

Our reality ends up being a lot closer to an original Grimm fairy tale rather than the softened Disney version we were expecting.

The key to pulling through the twist and turns in our life is to view them as opportunities for God to work in us. Building new roots in our identity in Christ. As the wind twists and turns in our lives we grow stronger, submitting to God’s will and flexing to meet His plan will create in us a deeper strength and trust in Him as we write the story of our lives.
