Mr.J Versus The Dumbbell

You ever hear that old adage, life is what happens when you are making other plans? Today has kind of felt like one of those days. There was a long list of things that I really wanted to get done today and somehow those things just didn’t happen. Again. First, I had some things I wanted to get done outside. But it was raining. Cross those things off the list. Next, it turns out, I didn’t actually write down the list, so I couldn’t remember what else I wanted to do exactly. Then, the icing on the cake…..

Now, a little while before this, he had gone to work out and lift weights. Nothing unusual there. He would do his workout, listen to a podcast or audiobook, in between his other schoolwork. You might think knowing this, my brain would put together this bizarre behavior and the thud and get a clue. Apparently, not so much.

I didn’t have to wait long for answers though. He quickly clued me in. Between slightly pained gasps, that is. While weight lifting a 15 pound dumbbell, he lost his grip and dropped it…on his toes. Yeah, I cringed too. Now, clued into the problem, I examined his foot. At the time I thought it looked remarkably good for a foot that had had fifteen pounds of metal dropped on it. There really didn’t seem to be any real visible damage. Then. I told him to put some ice on it and keep an eye on it.

A few hours have gone by. The one toe seems a little bit more swollen to me, but still not overly concerning. Right until he came up to me and said, ‘Look at my foot.’ He flipped his foot over so that I could see the bottom of his foot. The slightly swollen toe? Yeah, it was almost completely black on the bottom. I was like, ‘Oh. My. Goodness.’ It also looked to be more swollen than I had previously thought as well. He told me that his toe felt ‘tight’. Well, there was a reason for that, when I touched it, I realized that his entire toe was hard as can be. In my mind I couldn’t help but think, ‘Well, that can’t be healthy.’

I ended up taken him to one of the local urgent cares just to make sure the damage wasn’t going to be too much of a problem. The nurse took one look at the bottom of his foot and said, ‘Oh yeah, they are going to want pictures.’ The doctor took one look at the bottom of his foot and said, ‘We’re going to take some pictures. We will have a better idea of what’s going on after that.’

Two x-rays later they confirmed that he broke his toe. A clean break they tell me. About as good a break as you can hope for. (Guess nobody told them that I always hope for the bones to NOT be broken, lol.) One, special, non flexing shoe later and we were out of the door and on our way back home. With a mere 4-6 weeks of restrictions and a caution to be more careful with the weights in the future.

As you can probably imagine, after all of that, my plans for the day completely fallen to the wayside, I just threw in the towel. I will just have to try again tomorrow.
