Sick Days
Sick days. We all have them at some point. Thatโs not the time you want to spend trying to pull together ideas of what to do to maintain some kind of schooling. Let me offer you some good movie options that also offer a variety of learning opportunities.

10. Singing in the Rain
10. Singing in the rain: Singing in the rain is always a good option I think. It offers a unique insight in a time when our country changed forever. The introduction of the talking picture. Itโs a good eye opener for kids to show them how quickly things have changed. I know my kids are just blown away at the concept of talking on a phone with a cord on it ten miles long, lol. Let alone the concept that talking pictures have been around for less than 100 years.
9. Anne of Green Gables
9. Anne of Green : This is another one that gives good historical insight. The outfits of the time period, the concept of the one room schoolhouse, the work ethic of the timeframe, and so much more.
8. Fantasia 2000
8. Fantasia 2000: This one makes for a great opportunity to expose the kiddos to the enjoyment of instrumental music. A sick day is a perfect day for this one, because it doesnโt require any kind of deep thinking. The colors and music can just kind of flow for low energy enjoyment.
7. School of Rock
7. School of Rock: A fun option for a sick day. School of Rock has positive lessons about how even the most different of people can come together, find talents that they may not have even realized they had and then work together for a common goal. Another is the concept that you dont have to fit into a perfect mould to have the ability to teach others.
6. Gullivers Travels
6. Gullivers Travels: Now, my personal recommendation here is for the Jack Black version of this movie. It gives the concept of the literary Gulivers Travels, but with the more outgoing adventure that comes with Jack Black.
5. Sarah Plain and Tall
5. Sarah Plain and Tall: One nice option here is that you could incorporate the book and the movie into your curriculum if you so desired. You could either read the book and follow up with the movie, or watch the movie on the sick day and then incorporate the book after the fact. Sarah Plain and Tall is a literary favorite and shows just good clean life.
4. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit
4. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit: I know this one might not be the first mind to come to mind when you think educational movies, however it exemplifys the power in believing in something. The power in banding together despite circumstances, despite differences in backgrounds and simply believe in each other.
3. The Pagemaster
3. The Pagemaster: If you havent seen this one yet, you totally should. This is a great one. So many good lessons in it. I will name just a few. The entire movie is basically about getting kids interested in reading. Which in my mind would be a solid selling point by itself. Also, it addresses the concept of facing your fears and standing up for your friends, regardless of who they are or what they look like.
2. The Wizard of Oz
2. The Wizard of Oz: An absolute classic. A young womanโs bravery and spunk. A cowardly lion seeking courage. A scarecrow seeking a brain. A tin man seeking a heart. A motley crew banding together to pursue their dreams, only to find that they already had everything they needed inside of them.
1. The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride: Ok, maybe this one isnt what you would automatically think of in regards to education, but bear with me. In the princess bride they have just about everything. True love, bad guys, good guys, fighting against evil, heartache, struggle, comedy, its life really, with added Hollywood drama. Itโs fighting for what you know to be right, even when the chances of success seem slim to none. Itโs never giving up. It may be corny and crazy and absurd, but sometimes we all need a little bit of that in our day.
Thinking Questions
So, there it is for today. Hopefully I’ve given you some good ideas and perhaps helped you think of some options that you may not have previously considered. If you are feeling up to it, my suggestion is to ask your kids some thinking questions about your movie of choice. You can either tie in the ideas in this article or come up with some of your own.
